How to read this list

Max is the highest level you can get in survival. Goes on shows every kind of gear that can carry the enchantment, whether it comes from the enchanting table or only from a book on an anvil. Source tells you where to look: Table means the enchanting table can roll it, Villagers means librarians can sell the book, and Treasure means it never comes from the table.

Use the buttons above to filter by gear. Every name opens a full page with what each level does, the anvil cost, the conflicts and where to find it. To put several of them on one item, use the enchantment calculator or start from the best builds.

Enchantments by gear

Any gear (2)

These go on nearly everything with durability, which is why almost every max build includes them. This group has Mending, Unbreaking.

Armor (12)

Armor enchantments keep you alive or help you move. Every piece takes Protection or one of its three special types. Then the helmet, leggings and boots each add extras of their own. This group has Aqua Affinity, Blast Protection, Depth Strider, Feather Falling, Fire Protection, Frost Walker, Projectile Protection, Protection, Respiration, Soul Speed, Swift Sneak, Thorns.

Melee (11)

Melee enchantments go on swords, axes, spears and the mace. Each weapon carries one damage enchantment, then adds extras like Looting or Fire Aspect. This group has Bane of Arthropods, Breach, Density, Fire Aspect, Knockback, Looting, Lunge, Sharpness, Smite, Sweeping Edge, Wind Burst.

Ranged (11)

Bows, crossbows and tridents each have their own set. None of them share an enchantment except the ones every item can take. This group has Channeling, Flame, Impaling, Infinity, Loyalty, Multishot, Piercing, Power, Punch, Quick Charge, Riptide.

Tools (5)

Tool enchantments speed up mining or change what blocks drop. The fishing rod belongs here too, with two enchantments of its own. This group has Efficiency, Fortune, Luck of the Sea, Lure, Silk Touch.

Curses (2)

Curses are bad for you. They come on loot and books, and a grindstone can't remove them. The curses are Curse of Binding, Curse of Vanishing.

Where enchantments come from

The enchanting table can roll 36 of the 43 enchantments. It uses lapis lazuli and your levels, and up to 15 bookshelves raise the enchant level. Then higher enchant levels give higher enchantment levels and more enchantments at once. The enchanting guide explains the table, and the table setup tool shows where the bookshelves go.

Librarian villagers can sell 40 of them as books. A librarian also offers just one book trade at first, so players reroll its lectern until a good book shows up. The trading hall guide shows how to farm them, and the librarian price list shows what each book costs.

The treasure enchantments never come from the table: Frost Walker, Mending, Soul Speed, Swift Sneak, Wind Burst. Three of them have a single home: Soul Speed from bastion remnant chests and piglin bartering, Swift Sneak from ancient city chests, Wind Burst from ominous vaults in trial chambers. The others come from librarians, fishing and loot chests. See all treasure enchantments for where to look.

Max levels at a glance

Survival caps every enchantment at a fixed level. Two books of the same level merge into the next level on an anvil, up to that cap.

The max enchantments guide lists every cap with the cheapest way to reach it.

Enchantments that conflict

Some enchantments can't share an item. If you try, the anvil refuses the second one. These are the conflicts in Java 26.3:

The enchantment conflicts page explains each one and which side to pick.

Where to start

New to enchanting? Start with the ones that help on every trip. Unbreaking and Mending keep your gear alive. Protection on every armor piece cuts the damage you take. Then add Efficiency to your pickaxe and Sharpness to your sword. After that, Feather Falling boots and a Fortune pickaxe pay for themselves within a few trips.

Once you have several books, the order matters. Every anvil step makes the next one more expensive, so the calculator finds the cheapest order. The best enchantments pages show the full build for every item.

Java and Bedrock differences

Most enchantments work the same way in both editions, but a few differ. This list shows Java.

  • Sweeping Edge only exists in Java Edition, so Bedrock has one enchantment fewer.
  • Sharpness adds 1.25 damage per level in Bedrock, against 1 plus 0.5 per extra level in Java.
  • Impaling in Bedrock hits any mob in water or rain, while Java limits it to aquatic mobs.
  • Bedrock shears can take Silk Touch, and Java shears can't.
  • The Bedrock anvil only charges for the levels a book adds, while Java charges the full new level.

For the other edition, see the Bedrock enchantments list.

Questions

How many enchantments are in Minecraft?

Java 26.3 has 43 enchantments, including 2 curses. The list on this page is read from the game files, so it always matches the current version.

Which enchantments are treasure enchantments?

Curse of Binding, Curse of Vanishing, Frost Walker, Mending, Soul Speed, Swift Sneak, Wind Burst. They never appear in an enchanting table; you find them in loot, trades or fishing.

What is the rarest enchantment?

Swift Sneak: it only drops from ancient city chests. Soul Speed (piglins and bastions only) and Wind Burst (ominous vaults only) are close behind.

What is the best enchantment in Minecraft?

Mending, for most players. It repairs gear with experience, so a Mending item never has to break. Unbreaking, Protection, Efficiency and Sharpness come right after it.

Which enchantments can villagers not sell?

Soul Speed, Swift Sneak, Wind Burst. Librarians can sell every other enchantment as a book.

How many enchantments can one item have?

As many as it can take, as long as none of them conflict. The real limit is the anvil: every step costs more, and a step of 40 levels or more is Too Expensive.
