Fire Protection

Fire Protection reduces fire and lava damage and makes you stop burning sooner. Each level gives 2 protection points against fire and shortens burn time by 15%.

What Fire Protection does

LevelEffectBook cost
I2 points against fire (about 8% less fire damage per piece), burning lasts 15% less1
II4 points against fire (about 16% less fire damage per piece), burning lasts 30% less2
III6 points against fire (about 24% less fire damage per piece), burning lasts 45% less3
IV8 points against fire (about 32% less fire damage per piece), burning lasts 60% less4

Book cost is the anvil cost of putting that book on a fresh item. However, already-used items add their prior work penalty: work it out in the calculator.

How Fire Protection works

Fire Protection counts against fire damage: standing in fire, swimming in lava, burning after you leave it, and hits from burning sources. Each level gives 2 protection points against those, so a single piece of Fire Protection IV adds 8 points.

The second effect is shorter burning. Once you step out of lava or fire, the flames on you go out sooner. That cuts the after-burn damage, which is often what kills players who escape lava at low health.

Blaze fireballs count as fire damage and as projectile damage. So both Fire Protection and Projectile Protection reduce them.

One piece is usually enough

Protection also counts against fire. So three pieces of Protection IV plus one piece of Fire Protection IV already reach the 20-point cap for fire. A second piece of Fire Protection adds nothing against fire, but it costs you 4 more points against everything else.

For that reason, most players keep their main set on Protection and use Fire Protection only on a spare piece. Swap it in for a blaze farm, a long Nether trip or a lava lake build, then swap back.

Fire Protection or a Fire Resistance potion?

A Fire Resistance potion makes you immune to fire and lava damage while it lasts. Fire Protection only reduces the damage, so a long swim in lava still kills you. Still, the potion runs out and the enchantment does not.

In practice, carry both into the Nether. Fire Protection keeps a surprise fall into lava survivable, and the potion is what you drink before you swim through it on purpose.

Where it helps most

  • Blaze farms and Nether fortresses, where fireballs and fire blocks are everywhere.
  • Looting bastion remnants, which often sit over lava lakes.
  • Building around lava, where one wrong step sets you on fire.

Fire Protection by level

Each level adds 2 points against fire, so level IV adds 8. Lower levels also shorten burning less. One piece of level IV with three Protection IV pieces reaches the cap, so it is worth getting that piece to IV.

Which items take Fire Protection

Fire Protection goes on 4 kinds of gear in the calculator: helmet, chestplate, leggings, boots. An enchanting table can roll it on the helmet, chestplate, leggings, boots.

It can't share an item with Protection, Blast Protection or Projectile Protection. If an item already has one of those, the anvil skips the Fire Protection book. Java still charges 1 level for it.

Fire Protection from the enchanting table

The level you can roll depends on the item's enchantability. A material with a higher value reaches higher levels from the same level 30 enchant. This table shows the best Fire Protection each helmet can get from a level 30 enchant with 15 bookshelves.

ItemEnchantabilityBest from the table
Netherite Helmet15IV
Diamond Helmet10IV
Iron Helmet9IV
Golden Helmet25IV

Anything higher has to come from a book instead. Then the enchanting table calculator shows the exact chance for every level.

Anvil cost of Fire Protection

Fire Protection has an anvil multiplier of 2 from another item and 1 from a book. So a Fire Protection IV book costs 4 levels on a fresh item, and each lower level costs 1 less. Two fresh Fire Protection III books merge into Fire Protection IV for 4 levels. Building it from scratch takes 8 level I books and 7 merges, 28 levels in all. That is as cheap as books get, so it rarely decides the order.

Java charges the full resulting level every time, even when the item already has a lower level of it. Every step also adds the prior work penalty of both items. The enchantment calculator finds the cheapest order for your whole set of books.

Builds, questions and guides

Fire Protection can go on 4 items: best helmet enchantments, best chestplate enchantments, best leggings enchantments, best boots enchantments. To put it on in the cheapest order, see the helmet enchant order, chestplate enchant order, leggings enchant order, boots enchant order.

How to get Fire Protection

  • Enchanting table It can appear when you enchant a supported item at an enchanting table. However, higher levels need more bookshelves and a level 30 enchant.
  • Librarian villagers Librarians can sell it as an enchanted book. Level I costs 5–19 emeralds plus a book.
  • Gear worn by trial chamber mobs This loot table names it directly, so it is one of the most reliable places to look.
  • Random enchanted books It is also in the pool for the random enchanted books and gear in many chests and in fishing loot.

Fire Protection is an uncommon roll at the enchanting table and shows up on every armor piece. It also appears on the armor that trial chamber mobs wear, so those drops can carry it. Since it is cheap on the anvil (×1 per level from a book), a librarian book is an easy way to add it to a spare piece.

Enchanting power and librarian prices

LevelEnchanting powerLibrarian price
I10–185–19 emeralds
II18–268–32 emeralds
III26–3411–45 emeralds
IV34–4214–58 emeralds

The power column is the hidden enchanting value each level needs. A level 30 enchant on a netherite helmet reaches power 43 at most. That already includes the enchantability bonus and the random spread. The price column shows what a librarian can ask for each book. Curing a zombie villager or the Hero of the Village effect lowers it.

Tips

  • Useful for Nether trips and lava-heavy builds, but a Fire Resistance potion beats it outright.
  • It replaces Protection on that piece, so most players put it on one piece only, or keep a separate Nether set.

Commands

Give yourself a Fire Protection book or enchant the item in your hand. These work in Java 26.3 once cheats are on.

Questions

Does Fire Protection stack with Protection?

Not on the same piece: they are mutually exclusive. Across different pieces they add up, still capped at 80% total.

Does Fire Protection stop lava damage?

No, it only reduces it. Even with Fire Protection IV on every piece you still burn in lava, just more slowly. Drink a Fire Resistance potion before you swim through lava.

Which armor piece should get Fire Protection?

The points are the same on every piece. Pick a piece you are happy to swap, because one Fire Protection piece plus three Protection IV pieces already reaches the cap against fire.

Is Fire Protection good for the Nether?

It helps, but Protection on every piece is still the better all-round choice. Use one Fire Protection piece for blaze farms or lava-heavy builds, and bring Fire Resistance potions.
