What Wind Burst does
| Level | Effect | Book cost |
|---|---|---|
| I | an upward knockback of 1.2 after a smash attack | 2 |
| II | an upward knockback of 1.75 after a smash attack | 4 |
| III | an upward knockback of 2.2 after a smash attack | 6 |
Book cost is the anvil cost of putting that book on a fresh item. However, already-used items add their prior work penalty: work it out in the calculator.
How Wind Burst works
Wind Burst triggers when your mace lands a smash attack. A burst of wind throws you back up into the air. From there you can fall onto the next mob and smash again, which turns the mace into a chain of hits.
Each level launches you higher. Level I gives a small hop, while level III sends you high enough for a strong second smash. The burst only fires on a smash attack, so a normal hit on the ground does nothing.
How to chain smashes
1. Get height first. Throw a wind charge at your feet, jump from a ledge or dive with an elytra.
2. Fall onto the target and land the smash. Your fall damage resets on the hit.
3. Wind Burst throws you up again. Aim for the same mob or the next one in the group.
4. Keep going until the group is gone, then land on solid ground.
In practice, long chains need good aim. Each bounce sends you straight up, so mobs that move can slip out from under you.
Safety
Every smash that lands protects you from that fall. A miss does not. So wear Feather Falling IV boots and keep a water bucket or wind charges ready. Fights near lava or the void are risky, because the bounce sends you up and you land wherever you drift.
Wind Burst in a build
Wind Burst conflicts with nothing. So it fits next to Density or Breach, Fire Aspect, Unbreaking and Mending. With Density, every bounce adds a new fall, and each fall adds more Density damage. With Breach, the bounces keep you in the air against armored players.
It is a ×2 book, so Wind Burst III costs 6 levels on a fresh mace. The best mace enchantments page shows where it goes in the build, and the mace enchant order the cheapest steps.
Ominous vaults and how to open them
Wind Burst only comes from ominous vaults in trial chambers. To open one, you need an ominous trial key. Drink an ominous bottle to get Bad Omen, then walk into a trial chamber to turn it into Trial Omen. The spawners nearby turn ominous. Beat an ominous spawner and it drops an ominous trial key.
Each player can open each vault only once. So a chamber with several ominous vaults gives you several tries, and other players can't take your turn. The same vaults give heavy cores, so one trip can give you both the mace and its books.
Wind Burst by level
Level I gives a short hop, enough to land a weak follow-up. Level II gives a real second fall, and level III sends you high enough for a full-strength smash. With Density, the higher bounce also means more bonus damage on the next hit. So level III is the one to aim for.
Wind Burst needs a target
Wind Burst only fires when the smash hits a mob or player. You can't use it to bounce off the ground or to travel. For pure movement, wind charges are the tool to use.
Getting the most from ominous vaults
Ominous vaults can give many different rewards, so Wind Burst books take some luck. Clear every ominous spawner in a chamber to collect as many keys as possible. Vaults keep track of who has opened them, so bringing friends means more rolls for the group, and nobody's reward costs you yours.
Wind Burst in groups
Wind Burst shines against packs of mobs on open ground. Every smash bounces you up, and you pick the next target on the way down. In tight caves the ceiling stops the bounce, so it works best outside.
Wind Burst and Feather Falling
Since Wind Burst keeps you in the air, you spend a lot of time falling. Therefore Feather Falling IV boots matter even more with Wind Burst than with a plain mace. Then a missed smash costs you a little health instead of your life.
Wind Burst and the warden
The warden has a lot of health and hits very hard up close. Chaining smashes from above keeps you out of its melee reach for most of the fight. However, its sonic boom still reaches you, so only try it with full armor and a way out.
Common mistakes
- Swinging on the ground and wondering why nothing happens. Wind Burst only follows a smash attack.
- Bouncing near cliffs. The launch is strong, and you might land somewhere much lower.
- Using a level I book in PvP. The small bounce often gives too little height for a second smash.
Which items take Wind Burst
Wind Burst goes on 1 kind of gear in the calculator: mace. It is a treasure enchantment, so on every item it comes from an enchanted book and an anvil, never from the enchanting table.
Nothing conflicts with Wind Burst, so it fits next to every other enchantment its items can take.
Anvil cost of Wind Burst
Wind Burst has an anvil multiplier of 4 from another item and 2 from a book. So a Wind Burst III book costs 6 levels on a fresh item, and each lower level costs 2 less. Two fresh Wind Burst II books merge into Wind Burst III for 6 levels. Building it from scratch takes 4 level I books and 3 merges, 16 levels in all. That is a middling cost, so the order still matters once you combine several books.
Java charges the full resulting level every time, even when the item already has a lower level of it. Every step also adds the prior work penalty of both items. The enchantment calculator finds the cheapest order for your whole set of books.

How to get Wind Burst
- Ominous vaults (trial chambers) This loot table names it directly, so it is one of the most reliable places to look.
Wind Burst is a treasure enchantment with a single source: ominous vaults in trial chambers. It never appears in the enchanting table, librarians never sell it, and fishing never gives it.
Books can drop at different levels. Two books of the same level merge into the next one, so lower books from earlier runs still count toward Wind Burst III.
Tips
- Combine with Density for repeated high-damage smashes.
- Get it from ominous vaults in trial chambers, using ominous trial keys.
