Protection

Protection cuts almost every kind of damage: mobs, falls, fire, explosions and projectiles. Each level gives 1 protection point per armor piece, and every point removes 4% of the damage, up to the 80% cap. It is the one armor enchantment almost every build uses.

What Protection does

LevelEffectBook cost
I1 protection points against all damage, about 4% less damage from this piece1
II2 protection points against all damage, about 8% less damage from this piece2
III3 protection points against all damage, about 12% less damage from this piece3
IV4 protection points against all damage, about 16% less damage from this piece4

Book cost is the anvil cost of putting that book on a fresh item. However, already-used items add their prior work penalty: work it out in the calculator.

How Protection reduces damage

Protection works in two steps. First, your armor points and armor toughness cut the hit. Then every protection point removes 4% of what is left. So Protection still matters on netherite, because it works on the damage the armor lets through.

Each piece adds its own level, so four pieces of Protection IV give 16 points. The game also adds points from Fire, Blast and Projectile Protection and from Feather Falling, but only when they match the damage type. The total stops at 20 points, which is 80% less damage.

Here is what that means for a 20-damage hit in Java. Full netherite armor alone brings it down to 7.2 damage. Add Protection IV on all four pieces and you take 2.6. Full diamond armor goes from 8 to 2.9 with the same enchantments.

Armor points do nothing against falls, drowning or magic, but protection points still count there. That is why Protection IV on every piece also softens fall damage, even without Feather Falling.

Damage that ignores Protection

A few sources skip enchantments entirely. The warden's sonic boom ignores both armor and Protection, and so do the void and the /kill command.

Potions of Healing and Regeneration, totems and golden apples are your answer to those. Protection is a way to take less damage, not a way to stop dying.

Protection or a special type?

Fire, Blast and Projectile Protection give 2 points per level against their own damage, but nothing against anything else. Protection gives 1 point per level against almost everything. Because they exclude each other, every piece holds only one of the four.

The cap makes the choice easy. Three pieces of Protection IV and one piece of Blast Protection IV give 12 + 8 = 20 points against explosions, which is already the cap. Against everything else you drop from 16 points to 12, so you trade 16% of your general protection for a full 80% against one threat.

For normal survival, keep Protection on all four pieces. Then keep a spare set with one special piece for the job at hand. The Protection vs Blast Protection and Protection vs Fire Protection pages compare them in detail.

A max armor set

Most end-game sets use Protection IV, Unbreaking III and Mending on every piece. Then each slot adds its own extras: Respiration III and Aqua Affinity on the helmet, Swift Sneak III on the leggings, and Feather Falling IV plus Depth Strider III or Soul Speed III on the boots. Thorns III is optional on any piece.

The best armor enchantments page shows the full set, and the god armor generator gives you the commands. To see what your own set blocks, use the armor protection calculator.

Which level to aim for

Every level counts, but the last one counts the most for what you actually take. A full set of Protection III gives 12 points and lets 52% of the damage through. A full set of Protection IV gives 16 points and lets only 36% through. So going from III to IV on every piece means you take about 30% less damage than before.

Early on, put Protection on iron armor as soon as you can. The points do not depend on the armor material, so Protection IV on iron gives the same 4 points as on netherite. When you upgrade to diamond or netherite later, enchant the new pieces and keep the old set as a spare.

Leather and gold armor

Leather and gold armor have high enchantability, so the table often gives them strong rolls. Their armor points are low, though, and the enchantment can't make up for that. Use them for special jobs, such as gold boots near piglins, and put your best books on diamond or netherite.

Common mistakes

  • Putting Protection on an elytra or a shield. Neither can take it, so the book does nothing. See Protection on an elytra and Protection on a shield.
  • Upgrading Protection III to IV on a piece that has been on the anvil many times. The prior work penalty can make that single step cost more than a fresh piece.
  • Mixing in a special type on every piece. You only need one piece of it to reach the cap for that damage.

Which items take Protection

Protection goes on 4 kinds of gear in the calculator: helmet, chestplate, leggings, boots. An enchanting table can roll it on the helmet, chestplate, leggings, boots.

It can't share an item with Blast Protection, Fire Protection or Projectile Protection. If an item already has one of those, the anvil skips the Protection book. Java still charges 1 level for it.

Protection from the enchanting table

The level you can roll depends on the item's enchantability. A material with a higher value reaches higher levels from the same level 30 enchant. This table shows the best Protection each helmet can get from a level 30 enchant with 15 bookshelves.

ItemEnchantabilityBest from the table
Netherite Helmet15IV
Diamond Helmet10IV
Iron Helmet9IV
Golden Helmet25IV

Anything higher has to come from a book instead. Then the enchanting table calculator shows the exact chance for every level.

Anvil cost of Protection

Protection has an anvil multiplier of 1 from another item and 1 from a book. So a Protection IV book costs 4 levels on a fresh item, and each lower level costs 1 less. Two fresh Protection III books merge into Protection IV for 4 levels. Building it from scratch takes 8 level I books and 7 merges, 28 levels in all. That is as cheap as books get, so it rarely decides the order.

Java charges the full resulting level every time, even when the item already has a lower level of it. Every step also adds the prior work penalty of both items. The enchantment calculator finds the cheapest order for your whole set of books.

Builds, questions and guides

Protection is part of the max build for 4 items: best helmet enchantments, best chestplate enchantments, best leggings enchantments, best boots enchantments. To put it on in the cheapest order, see the helmet enchant order, chestplate enchant order, leggings enchant order, boots enchant order.

Common questions: can you put Protection on an elytra?, can you put Protection on a shield?

More reading: Getting books from librarians, How to enchant in Minecraft, Every max enchantment level. You can make a Protection book with the command generator. The librarian price list shows what villagers charge for it.

How to get Protection

  • Enchanting table It can appear when you enchant a supported item at an enchanting table. However, higher levels need more bookshelves and a level 30 enchant.
  • Librarian villagers Librarians can sell it as an enchanted book. Level I costs 5–19 emeralds plus a book.
  • Gear worn by trial chamber mobs This loot table names it directly, so it is one of the most reliable places to look.
  • Random enchanted books It is also in the pool for the random enchanted books and gear in many chests and in fishing loot.

Protection has the highest table weight of any armor enchantment, so most level 30 armor enchants include it. That makes the table the cheapest source: enchant each piece directly and add the other books later.

A librarian who sells Protection IV is still worth finding, because it lets you fix a piece the table rolled badly without starting over.

Enchanting power and librarian prices

LevelEnchanting powerLibrarian price
I1–125–19 emeralds
II12–238–32 emeralds
III23–3411–45 emeralds
IV34–4514–58 emeralds

The power column is the hidden enchanting value each level needs. A level 30 enchant on a netherite helmet reaches power 43 at most. That already includes the enchantability bonus and the random spread. The price column shows what a librarian can ask for each book. Curing a zombie villager or the Hero of the Village effect lowers it.

Tips

  • Four pieces of Protection IV give 16 points, which is 64% less damage on top of the armor itself.
  • Protection does not stack with the special types on one piece: choose Protection, Fire, Blast or Projectile Protection per piece.
  • All enchantments together stop at 20 points (80%), so Feather Falling on boots still helps against falls.

Commands

Give yourself a Protection book or enchant the item in your hand. These work in Java 26.3 once cheats are on.

/give @p enchanted_book[stored_enchantments={protection:4}] /enchant @s protection 4 /give @p netherite_helmet[enchantments={protection:4}]

Versions

Protection is in every Java version from 1.21 (when enchantments became data files) up to 26.3.

  • 1.21.9: now goes on copper boots, copper leggings, copper chestplate, copper helmet.

Questions

Is Protection better than Blast or Fire Protection?

For everyday play, yes. The specialised types protect twice as much against one kind of damage but nothing against the rest. Use them only for a specific job, like Blast Protection for fighting creepers or the wither.

What does a full set of Protection IV do?

It gives 16 protection points, so 64% less damage after armor. Add Feather Falling IV on the boots and fall damage drops by up to 80%.

How much damage does Protection IV reduce?

One piece of Protection IV gives 4 points, which is 16% less damage. A full set gives 16 points, which is 64% less damage after armor. Other protection enchantments can push the total to the 80% cap.

Can you get Protection V?

Not in survival: Protection IV is the max. Commands like /give can make higher levels, but the 20-point cap still limits the total to 80%.

Does Protection reduce fall damage?

Yes. Every Protection point also counts against falls, so a full Protection IV set cuts fall damage by 64% on its own. Feather Falling on the boots adds more, up to the 80% cap.

Is Protection worth it on leather armor?

It gives the same points as on any other armor, but leather has very few armor points of its own. Enchant iron, diamond or netherite armor instead when you can.
