What matters on a shield

A shield blocks most melee hits, arrows and explosions from the front, but each block costs durability. It only takes Unbreaking, Mending and Curse of Vanishing, so the best shield is simply Unbreaking III and Mending.

Blocking an attack of 3 damage or more costs 1 durability plus 1 for each full point of damage. A shield has 336 durability, so heavy hits wear it down quickly. Unbreaking III makes those losses rare, and Mending refills the rest.

Watch out for axes. An axe hit disables a shield for 5 seconds, however it is enchanted.

Builds for different playstyles

Everyday shield

Unbreaking III and Mending. That is the whole build, and it costs only a few levels.

PvP shield

The same two books. Keep a spare shield in your hotbar, because an axe can disable the one you hold.

Mob farm and AFK spots

Hold a shield in your offhand while you wait at a farm. It blocks the odd arrow, and Mending soaks up the farm's XP along with your other gear.

Nether shield

Unbreaking III and Mending, and raise it when a ghast fires. A shield blocks ghast fireballs from the front, along with blaze and skeleton shots.

Raids and boss fights

Unbreaking III and Mending, and repair it before a raid. Ravagers and vindicators hit hard, so each blocked hit costs more durability.

Each enchantment on the shield

Unbreaking III

Unbreaking gives items a chance to not lose durability when used. At level III that means tools skip 75% of durability loss, armor 30%. Takes durability loss less often. The book costs 3 levels on a fresh shield. More about Unbreaking.

Mending

Mending repairs an item with experience orbs. At level I that means each experience point you pick up repairs 2 durability. The book costs 2 levels on a fresh shield. More about Mending.

Blocking in practice

Raise the shield with right-click, and it starts blocking after a short delay of about a quarter of a second. While it is up you move slowly, so lower it between hits.

Time your blocks against hard hitters and lower the shield to strike back. Holding it up all the time costs you damage, and in Java an axe can knock it out of play.

Crafting and decorating

You craft a shield from six planks and one iron ingot. Combine it with a banner in a crafting grid to put the banner's pattern on it. The pattern is only for looks and changes nothing else.

Shield or totem?

A totem of undying saves you from one death, while a shield stops many hits. You can only hold one of them in your offhand, so pick the shield for long fights and the totem when one big hit could kill you.

What a shield can't stop

A shield stops most melee hits, arrows and creeper blasts from the front. It doesn't stop damage from behind, fall damage, fire or potion effects. So pair it with good armor rather than relying on it alone.

Shields in fights

Hold the shield in your offhand so your weapon stays ready. Mending works in the offhand too, so experience from every kill tops the shield up.

A shield only covers what is in front of you. So keep your back to a wall in a crowd, and turn to face creepers before they blow.

Where to get the books

You need 2 books for this build. Mending is a treasure enchantment, so the enchanting table won't give it. Plan to trade or loot for it first. Here is where each one comes from:

  • Unbreaking III: the enchanting table, librarian villagers, random chest loot and fishing.
  • Mending: librarian villagers, trial chamber vaults, random chest loot and fishing.

Librarians are the most reliable source for exact books, because you can reroll them until they offer the one you want. The trading hall guide shows how, and the villager trade tool lists the prices. Combine the books in the cheapest anvil order so no step becomes too expensive.

The enchanting table won't take a shield at all, so every enchantment on it comes from books on an anvil. You can still enchant plain books at the table and apply them here.

Which books to get first

Get Unbreaking III first, since it is easy. Then add Mending once your armor has it. A shield sits in your offhand all the time, so it soaks up plenty of experience.

Unbreaking books also come from fishing and chest loot, so a shield often gets one early. Put it on as soon as you find it, because a shield takes heavy use from day one.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Trying to add Protection or Thorns. Shields only take Unbreaking, Mending and Curse of Vanishing.
  • Repairing it with planks over and over. Each anvil repair raises the prior work penalty.
  • Keeping the shield in your main hand. Put it in the offhand, so it blocks while your weapon stays ready.
  • Starting a big fight on low durability. Repair first.
  • Holding the shield up against an axe user. The axe disables it for 5 seconds, so step back instead.

Shield enchantment questions

Every enchantment a shield can take in Java 26.3: Unbreaking, Mending.

Quick answers: can you put Mending on a shield?, can you put Protection on a shield?

Putting the books on

Unbreaking III alone costs 3 levels on a fresh shield. Mending alone costs 2 levels on a fresh shield. Both together cost 6 levels, about 54 experience points if you spend them as you earn them. Unbreaking III first costs 3 + 3 levels. Mending first costs 2 + 4. Merging the two books first, then adding the result, costs 2 + 6. The cheapest route costs 6.

Afterwards the shield has been on the anvil 2 times, so its prior work penalty is 3. Any later anvil repair starts from that cost, which is one more reason to let Mending do the repairs. Check your own item in the enchantment calculator if it already has anvil uses.
