Enchanting Table Calculator

This enchanting table calculator uses the game's real formula. Pick an item, set your bookshelves and choose a level to see the chance of every enchantment the table can roll.

How to use it

  1. Pick the item and its material: enchantability differs a lot between materials.
  2. Set how many bookshelves surround your table (15 is the maximum).
  3. Click a button level or drag the level slider to see the odds of every enchantment and level.

Good to know

  • Books get one enchantment fewer than gear, but they let you choose the item later.
  • If an option shows the enchantment you want in its hover hint, that enchantment is guaranteed; the rest are rolled.
  • The options only change after you enchant something: spend one level on a cheap item to get new ones.

How the enchanting table works

Each of the three buttons gets a level from your bookshelves: with 15 bookshelves the bottom one is always 30. The game then adds a random bonus based on the item's enchantability, varies the result by up to 15%, and picks enchantments whose cost range fits. Rare enchantments have a lower weight, so they come up less often.

This is why gold gear gets better enchantments than diamond: gold has an enchantability of 22, diamond only 10. A diamond sword can't get Sharpness V from the table at all, but a golden one can.

Treasure enchantments like Mending, Frost Walker and Swift Sneak never come from the table. Get them from librarians or loot.

The formula behind the odds

The calculator runs the same three steps as the game. First, your bookshelves set the three button levels. With 15 shelves the top button lands on 2–10, the middle on 6–21 and the bottom on exactly 30.

Next, the game turns the button level into a hidden enchanting level. It adds 1, plus two random numbers that each run from 0 to a quarter of the item's enchantability. Then it moves the total up or down by as much as 15%. That is why enchantability matters so much.

Finally, the game lists every enchantment whose cost window contains the hidden level. It picks one by weight, so common ones like Protection and Sharpness win more often than rare ones like Silk Touch. After that, it may add more. The chance of an extra is (level + 1) in 50, and the level halves after every extra pick.

Worked example: diamond vs gold

A diamond sword has enchantability 10, so each random bonus runs from 0 to 2. At button level 30, the hidden level lands between about 26 and 40. Sharpness V needs at least 45, so it can never appear. Sharpness IV needs 34, so it can.

The calculator gives Sharpness on 38.4% of level 30 rolls for a diamond sword: 22.3% at III and 16.0% at IV. Also, 68.0% of those rolls carry two or more enchantments.

A golden sword tells a different story. Its enchantability of 22 lifts the top of the range to about 47, so Sharpness V becomes possible. Still, it stays rare: just 0.2% of level 30 rolls. Gold also breaks fast, so most players enchant books instead and move them with an anvil.

How to read the result

  • Chance is how often an enchantment appears on one roll, at any level.
  • The level split shows how that chance divides between levels. Add the splits up and you get the chance.
  • The chances add up to more than 100% because one roll can carry several enchantments.
  • Best possible here lists the highest level the table can ever reach for this item at this button level.
  • The numbers come from 20,000 simulated rolls, so they can drift by a few tenths of a percent.

Getting the enchantment you want

Each option costs only 1, 2 or 3 levels and the same number of lapis lazuli. The number on the button is the level you need to have, not the level you pay. So a level 30 enchant from level 30 leaves you at level 27.

The hover hint shows one enchantment from the roll, and that one always ends up on the item. If none of the three hints suit you, enchant a cheap item with the top option. That spends 1 level and 1 lapis, and then all three options reroll.

Books are the flexible choice. They roll with enchantability 1 and drop one enchantment when a roll gives several, so only 21.1% of level 30 book rolls keep two or more. But you can put a book on any item later with an anvil, and the enchantment calculator plans the cheapest order. See the enchanted book page for more.

Common mistakes

  • Hoping for Sharpness V on a diamond or netherite sword. The table stops at Sharpness IV for both, so buy the level V book from a librarian instead.
  • Hoping for Efficiency V on a diamond pickaxe. Its best from the table is Efficiency IV, but two Efficiency IV books combine into V on an anvil.
  • Comparing book odds with gear odds. Tick "Enchant a book instead" to see what a book can really roll.
  • Placing more than 15 shelves. Extra shelves add nothing, and the setup tool shows which ones count.
  • Looking for treasure enchantments. The treasure enchantment guide lists where each one comes from.

Questions

How many bookshelves do you need for level 30?

15. The bookshelves must be two blocks away from the table, with air (or grass, snow layers or water) between them and the table.

Why can't I get Mending from the enchanting table?

Mending is a treasure enchantment. Treasure enchantments never appear in the enchanting table.

Which material gets the best enchantments?

Gold, with an enchantability of 22 for tools and 25 for armor. Netherite (15) beats diamond (10).

Can a diamond sword get Sharpness V from the enchanting table?

No. At level 30 its hidden level stops at about 40, below the 45 that Sharpness V needs. Combine two Sharpness IV books on an anvil, or buy a Sharpness V book from a librarian.

How many levels does the enchanting table take?

Only 1, 2 or 3 levels, plus the same number of lapis lazuli. The level on the button is what you need to have, not what you pay.

Is the enchantment in the hover hint guaranteed?

Yes. The hint shows one enchantment from the roll, and it is always on the result. The others stay hidden until you enchant.

Why do the enchanting table options never change?

They only reroll after you enchant something. Spend 1 level on the top option with a cheap item, like a wooden shovel, to get new options.
