Can you put Protection on a shield?

No. You can't put Protection on a shield in Bedrock 26.60, not even with an anvil.

Why not

Protection is not on the shield's list. Here is what a shield can take instead: Curse of Vanishing, Unbreaking, Mending.

What that means in practice

Shields block damage by being raised, not with armor points, so armor enchantments have nothing to work with. A raised shield already stops most attacks from the front. What a shield needs is durability, which is where Unbreaking and Mending come in.

What to use instead

Shields only take Unbreaking, Mending and Curse of Vanishing. Blocking already stops most damage from the front, so durability is what matters on a shield. On a fresh shield, Unbreaking III costs 3 levels and Mending costs 2 levels as a book.

A raised shield blocks melee hits, arrows and most explosion damage from the front. However, it does nothing for hits from behind or while it is lowered. Protection on your armor covers what the shield misses.

See Unbreaking and Mending, or the full shield build.

Why the game says no

Protection only goes on helmet, chestplate, leggings and boots. A shield is not on that list. That matters because Bedrock checks a built-in list of items for each enchantment. So the anvil gives no result, and the enchanting table never offers it.

No survival trick changes that. Combining two items, renaming or using a grindstone first all leave the list the same.

The best shield build instead

So a max shield has Unbreaking III and Mending. In the cheapest order it costs 6 levels over 2 anvil steps, and no step goes above 3. Open it in the calculator.

The best shield enchantments page explains every book.

Where Protection goes

  • Protection goes on helmet, chestplate, leggings and boots. The enchanting table can offer it on all of them. Related questions: Protection on elytra.

Commands and creative mode

The /enchant command refuses too, because a shield can't take Protection. Bedrock's /give can't add enchantments, so there is no way around it. The command generator writes the right syntax for your edition.

Java and Bedrock

As far as the item list goes, the answer is also the same in Java and Bedrock. The anvil differs, though: Bedrock only charges for the levels a book adds. This page follows Bedrock 26.60.

About Protection

Protection cuts almost every kind of damage: mobs, falls, fire, explosions and projectiles. Each level gives 1 protection point per armor piece, and every point removes 4% of the damage, up to the 80% cap. It is the one armor enchantment almost every build uses.

Protection has a max level of IV. If you need a book, you can get it from the enchanting table, librarian villagers, gear worn by trial chamber mobs and enchanted loot from fishing and chests. Before you buy, read everything about Protection, including what each level does.

What else a shield can take

Instead, a shield can take Unbreaking and Mending. Then the best shield enchantments page ranks them and gives the max build.

Questions

Can you put Protection on a shield?

No. You can't put Protection on a shield in Bedrock 26.60, not even with an anvil.

What else can Protection go on?

helmet, chestplate, leggings and boots.

Can a shield have Mending?

Yes. Mending and Unbreaking both go on a shield, and Mending repairs it in your offhand.

What is the best shield build?

Unbreaking III and Mending. Those are the only useful enchantments a shield can take.

Does Unbreaking help a shield?

Yes. It gives each blocked hit a chance to cost no durability.

Can a shield get Protection from an enchanting table or a villager?

No. The enchanting table only offers enchantments an item supports. A villager's Protection book still can't go on a shield, because the anvil checks the same list.
